The Sporting Breeds.....

In the field, the hunter uses three different types of gundogs. These are those that find the game, retrieve the game or work at both of these in rough terrain close to the hunter. The first group that specializes in finding the game are the Pointers and Setters. When they spot game, they signal the hunter by either "pointing" the nose toward the bird or "setting" which refers to the rigid stance they take once the bird is spotted. The second group is the Retrievers. They are responsible for going over land or into water to bring the bird that has been shot back to the hunter. The last group is the Spaniels who remain at the hunter's side until they spot the bird, flush it from its cover and they then retrieve it.

Though there is a large size difference in this group, their purpose of assisting the hunter is universal. There are 26 breeds in the Sporting Group.
