The Non-Sporting Breeds.....
When dog shows began, they were primarily set up to choose the best sporting dogs for hunters in the field. As more breeds developed that were not suitable for this field work, these dogs were shown in a "non-sporting" category. Over the years as the purpose of each of these breeds became clear, they were divided into their specialized areas such as working, terriers and hounds. The Non-Sporting group consists of those dogs that remained. These breeds no longer provide the function for which they were originally bred such as the Bulldog for bull baiting or the Dalmatian as a coach dog. They are a reflection of an earlier age but remain, to this day, among the most popular breeds. There are 18 breeds in the Non-Sporting Group.
