The Herding Breeds.....

    When man recognized the herding instinct was what made the wolf a successful hunter, he adapted that trait to his advantage and developed the herding breeds. Domestication that was later followed by selective breeding helped these dogs to evolve into the herding dogs so vital for successful farming. The great agricultural economy could never have been developed without these dogs working in tandem with man to move herds. By nature, these dogs are agile. They anticipate every move, can turn on a dime, and either working from signals of the shepherd or relying on their own instinct, they can "eye" their flock into obedience. The agility remains present as a major characteristic even in those members of the group who have changed their function to being draft animals or guard dogs. There are 17 breeds or varieties in the Herding Group.
